Gathering of Haiku poems 2016/08/06
Yesterday we had a monthly gathering of Haiku poems. 10 members and one master gathered and each member presented 6 seasonal fresh poems which they had prepared beforehand. It is our rule to have one poem which includes the given subject.
Another rule is that members have to make a poem instantly by using a subject which is given at the gathering without any pre-notice.
Then each member selects 7 poems, without knowing who makes which poems, among total 77 poems.
The master makes comments on 77 poems one by one and advised how to improve poems.
The poems and poets which obtained high scores from members do not receive any prize but satisfaction, however each member can learn how to make better poems through this gathering, especially by appreciation and comments from the master and other members.
Yesterday the given subject was “autumn in the night” which means that we can find a sign of autumn in the night of ending summer even though it is still terribly hot during midday. It is Japanese tendency to be fond of feelings of taking seasons in advance.
Another sudden subject, which was given on that day, was “manly or brave”.
It is good lesson to make Haiku instantly by using given words or concepts.
The gathering lasted 4 hours and a drinking party with cheerful and reviewing conversation followed.
